In a letter to the Irish Freedom Committee, a POW at Maghaberry jail has told us disturbing news about the security forces' heavy-handed response to the prisoners' Easter protest at the jail, and conditions now.

The prisoner writes:

"After 36 hours upwards to 150 police and jailers surrounded the canteen with riot gear, shields, helmets, gas masks, balaclavas, axes, sledge hammers, picks and power saws and appeared ready to remove everyone by force. POWs were taken out one by one through lines of police and dogs.

Each strip searched, 13 taken to isolation units and 15 were returned to empty cells. 13 were charged under Rule 7 by the Secretary of State for one and a half days. No one allowed a change of clothes for four days.

All have been returned to Roe House and are being held under Rule 35 and kept in lockdown for 23 hours a day. The cells of some of the 13 returned from isolation units were wrecked, towels in the toilet wet mattresses etc. each cell took hours to clean. All 28 have been charged with "Mutiny". Relatives being told that they had not properly scheduled visits, POWs being told that they had no visits when they were on the schedule. Meals are still an issue, not making it to the prisoners as scheduled etc. Situation worse now than before Easter."

The Irish Freedom Committee has sent a registered letter to Paul Goggins stating that despite Northern Ireland Prisons Services claims to the contrary, we are fully aware that the republican prisoners are still on 23-hour lockdown. We further wrote:

"Since we cannot get a straight answer regarding the number of hours prisoners are being locked up each day, we do not expect further clarity from your offices regarding the numerous other human rights complaints at Maghaberry jail. We wouldrespectfully request then that an immediate, impartial investigation belaunched into the numerous, and long-standing,human rights complaints bythe republican prisoners, and their families,at Maghaberry Jail."

Dear Mr. Goggins

I am writing with my deep concerns regarding the dire situation at Maghaberry Prison, where recent disturbances brought world-wide attention to a trend of gravely worsening conditions inside.

I reference detailed testimonials by the political prisoners in Roe House at Maghaberry jail, in which are described instances of food and fresh water being with-held during extended periods of lock-down time of up to 23 hours at a time; meals denied to prisoners for up to four days, due to `staff shortages'; indiscriminate transfer of prisoners to solitary confinement- where beatings have frequently taken place- for days at a time; an instance of a prisoner being viciously mauled by a prison dog in February; repeated body searches of prisoners up to 40 times in a single day,and strip-searches of family visitors including women.

I am also aware that the prisoners have made repeated complaints about unhygienic conditions,which include being forced to eat meals in their cells within inches of open toilets; rather than being permitted to eat in the dining area. Also, a previous protest at Roe House resulted in the men refusing to shave or cut their hair rather than being required to do so in their kitchen sink,where plates and cutlery are washed. I further refer to a report of a recent visit to Maghaberry by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT). The Committee's report described unacceptable conditions, including violent attacks by SST officers while being held in solitary confinement, instances of degrading and humiliating body-cavity searches, severe over-crowding, poor education and recreation facilities, and inadequate access to mental and physical health care.

There is no reason why these appalling abuses should continue in your facility. An independent review of this worsening situation must be made, if conditions have deteriorated so far as to force prisoners to resort to their action of Easter weekend; where the takeover of their quarters made International news.

The favor of a reply is requested. I have forwarded a copy of this letter to others including local media here.

The jailing of Pat O'Donnell is a travesty of justice. He is just the
latest victim by the (Irish) state which has put the interests of Shell
and private profit above the interests of its own citizens.



Pat should be released immediately. Shell's project in Mayo should
be halted and the significant oil and gas reserves nationalized and used
to fund public services.

The Prodigals at Paddy Reilly’s - Friday Night, March 5th, 2010

Nothing says brilliant New York Irish sound like the Prodigals, who have been gigging since 1997, gaining world wide acclaim and international fame as one of New York’s hottest Irish bands, with the New York Times calling them “indelibly Irish”, music journalist John O‘Regan, calling their music “ a molotov cocktail of irish music and rock & roll”, and Rock n’ Reel magazine, claiming that The Prodigals are “the best funky-Celtic-folksters doing the rounds…wholly inspirational”, and after seeing them last night at historical Paddy Reilly’s on the corner of 2nd Avenue and E. 29th , I am inclined to wholeheartedly, agree.

Nothing says more about a great band than one that never fails to keep a gyrating and tumultuous live audience , dancing with abandon , shaking it like it’s nobody’s business, and boogying and revelling with a devil may care attitude, and no one has mastered this like The Prodigals.

From beginning to end, from the minute they came on stage at 11 PM and finished their set at 2 AM, their audience remained singing along to every word to classics like “Paddy’s Heaven”, “One True Cause”, “Quart of Gin”, “Works Too Bloody Hard”, ( a Gregory Grene original from his solo album, “Freedom Now!), “Whiskey Asylum”, “Going Home”, “New York Lullaby”, “Bunch of Red Roses”, “Jackie Hall”, “Happy Man”, “Dreaming In Hell’s Kitchen”, “Allright Son”, “Ball of Alcohol”, “Uncle Arthur”, “Black Eyed Gypsy”, “I Don’t Care”, the funky-reggae Celt-Boogie of “Ballybay, and my favorite Prodigals crowd-pleaser, their kick-arse version of “Spancil Hill” (played with intensity in one brilliant medley with “Ghost Riders In The Sky”), with every single person in attendance moving and grooving to that Prodigals New York Paddy beat. Singles shimmy-shimmied , Couples did their own versions of the Irish Waltz or the Plastic Paddy Tango, and their was even a granny dancing with her cane amidst the rowdy dancers and boogiers.


Lead singer and accordion player, the legendary Gregory Grene, really keeps a captive audience, his accordion boom-boom filling the dancefloor with frantic fandango go go goers, singing along to every word he croons with his Chi-town meets Cavan harmony. Galway native, Dave Fahy is equally proficient as a brilliant singer and guitarist, leading many songs with an unrivalled skill that defies all preconceptions of Irish music, with a voice that captures your attention and makes you want to dance the ceilidh.


New addition to the band, Cavan native and banjo player, Darren Maloney, is a fine addition to a fine and grand band, who, was curiously enough, playing the drums last night, instead of the mighty banjo. And last but not least, the Bulgarian Bass player, Ed Kollar, really adds a new dimension to the Prodigals Celtic street boogie. All in all, no one who attends a Prodigals gig will ever be bored, and unlike a gig in the woodlands of Oregon or watching the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall , the audience will never stand stiff as boards ready-made for coffin creation, but will shake and boogie like its noone’s goddamn business !!!!

Folk-Punk Musical Legend Dies. Alistair Hulett R.I.P

News travels fast in this twenty-first century, even without the benefit of mainstream media.

But just in case you haven't already heard, Alistair Hulett passed away last night (Thursday 28 January; about 5:30am on Friday morning Sydney time) in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. Alistair was on the list for a liver transplant, but it seems it didn't arrive soon enough. And by this time, cancer had spread to other parts of Alistair's body.

Right till the very end, Fatima was there by Alistair's side. Fatima rallied the troops this week, and encouraged many of Alistair's friends and fans to send messages of support. These messages came flooding in, and kept Alistair cheered till the end.

History will judge Alistair to have been a fine singer and songwriter, from his punky days with Roaring Jack, through to his solo work, the albums he recorded with Dave Swarbrick and his final release with the Malkies. Many of Alistair's songs have been covered by both folk musicians and punk bands

Alistair was not only a great songwriter but a thoughtful interpreter of traditional Scottish and Irish music well.

Politics also dominated Alistair's life and his activities. Alistair got behind many causes in both Australia and Scotland. Who could forget Roaring Jack's successful campaign to release Tim Anderson, who was wrongly convicted of the 1978 Sydney Hilton Hotel bombing? Or the support Alistair and Roaring Jack gave to striking workers on Cockatoo Island? And his efforts to stop a community swimming pool from closing down in Glasgow.

I am sure there will be many activities in Britain to help remember Alistair. There will also be events in Australia for those who wish to celebrate Alistair's life and music.
