On July 4th, 1981, the Irish Republican Prisoners of War issued a statement, spelling out the five demands for the Irish political prisoners at the H-Blocks at the Long Kesh Maze Prison in asking for Special Category Political Status, asking that their sentences be deemed not crimes but political acts.
The five demands these Irish volunteers asked for included:
1. The right not to wear a prison uniform.

3. The right of free association with other prisoners, and to organize educational and recreational pursuits at their behest.
4. The right to one visit, one letter and one parcel per week.
5. Full restoration of remission lost through their protest.
