    WORKERS OCCUPY WATERFORD FACTORY

Ireland: Workers occupy Waterford crystal factory
    By Steve James
    3 February 2009

Two hundred workers have occupied the historic Waterford Crystal plant and visitor centre at Kilbarry near Waterford, Ireland. The occupation was launched on Friday in response to the decision by the failed company's receiver to cease manufacturing production, lock out and sack some 480 workers. Local shops have supplied food and drinks.

The move by the receiver, in conditions of deepening economic crisis in Ireland and internationally, emerged after David Carson, of receivers Deloitte, reneged on a previous pledge to maintain production at the site that produces luxury crystal for the world market.

Negotiations have been ongoing for some weeks with two prospective buyers. Both KPS Capital and Clarion Capital are considering buying the Waterford Wedgewood group, but reportedly only intend to maintain 300 jobs at the plant out of the current 800.

Union officials had made clear they would do nothing to protect workers' jobs. Clarion has now submitted a bid that has been given approval by the Unite trade union, with regional secretary Jimmy Kelly stating that the union was "encouraged". Clarion's plans for the plant would retain
only 300 workers. It specialises in leveraged capital investment in luxury, healthcare, insurance and advertising industries. KPS do the same in basic manufacturing. Both are New York-based venture capitalists.

According to RTE, just 200 workers were asked to turn up for work yesterday—those who were not served with termination of employment letters on Friday evening. Unite urged the 200 employees to report for work as normal.

Waterford Wedgewood was placed in administration last month following a refusal by bankers to extend credit. The company employs 800 workers in Waterford and 6,000 worldwide, including 1,500 in Indonesia. Other outsourced operations are in Brazil, Romania and Slovenia. The company collapsed after missing a deadline on €449 million debt. The pension scheme is also €111 million in debt and is likely to be wound up. Some 367 redundancies have also been confirmed in Staffordshire in the UK, where 1,900 remain employed by the company.

The occupation is proof that broad sections of workers are seeking collective means to resist the sharp onslaught on living standards that the world financial crisis is bringing in its wake. The same day Ireland was warned that its state creditworthiness faced being downgraded on Moody's, the international credit agency.

Carson's intention to cease glass production and close the popular visitor centre was leaked by former managers to workers and union officials. Word spread quickly to Waterford Wedgewood workers and 60 or 70 rushed to the site to prevent the entire workforce being locked out.

For others the first indication of a lock-out was when the security staff shut the doors. No official notification was issued to either staff, or apparently the trade union Unite.

Private security teams that had been on site over the last few weeks attempted to bar access, but workers were able to seize control of both the visitor centre and the production plant. One person reportedly received minor injuries when a pane of glass was smashed in scuffles.

Around 100 workers slept in the factory over Friday night. Colleagues and relatives brought bedding and food, while an eight hour shift rota was drawn to ensure up to 40 workers were on site at any time. Workers say they are committed to remain on site until the decision to close the
plant is reversed. A demonstration was held outside the plant Saturday, which was attended by some 2,000 supporters.

Many of the older workforce have been employed at Waterford for decades, have built up pensions that are now imperilled, and have little prospect of alternative employment.

John Dooley, one of the workers involved, told the Irish Times that he is still due €30,000 in redundancy payments out of €55,000 from the company. "€55,000 is small enough money for 46 years service, and it would take small enough money from the government to keep this place
open, at least until a new buyer can be found. We are going to stay here for the long haul. We have nothing to lose".

Dooley joined the company in 1962.

"Today they've pulled the plug on us", said Jean Croke to the Irish Independent. "We're being forgotten. A lot of us came here straight from school, we've worked nowhere else. How are we going to get jobs now? There's nothing out there for us".

Statements by union officials make clear that Unite has been working closely with the company since it was placed in receivership earlier in January. Throughout the decay of Waterford Wedgewood, a process in which many thousands of jobs have already been lost, relations between the company and Unite have been amicable.

Unite's primary concern is to ensure that job losses are packaged in a manner that can be easily foisted upon the workforce—through "natural wastage" and so-called "voluntary" redundancy. Kelly promised on January 5, "The union will work closely with any prospective purchasers of the business so as to ensure we save the maximum number of quality jobs". Walter Cullen, another Unite regional official, told the press of a phone conversation he had with Carson, shortly after the closure was announced.

"I reminded him that he was breaking his word, that he had given us a firm commitment that there would be no large-scale redundancies similar to what was imposed in Wedgwood, and that if a decision was made to close the company, he would meet with us to hold discussions, because we have alternatives. What we need now is to re-establish the process, and this decision has to be reversed".

As well as collaborating with potential buyers, the Irish trade unions are currently involved in talks with the Irish government to create a new "partnership" agreement to ensure that the costs of the collapsing economy and the huge bailouts to Irish banks are passed onto the working
class in the form of an extended pay freeze.

At this point no agreement has been reached, since the government are seeking support for swinging public sector pay cuts, which the union bureaucracy do not relish seeking to impose. The government are seeking to save €2 billion immediately. But new agreement, formal or informal, there will be, following on from decades of partnership agreements between the trade unions, business and government.

Nothing can be defended through trade unions tied in every aspect of their existence to Irish and international capital. Rather the first steps taken by Waterford Wedgewood workers should be a point of departure in the development of independent workers' committees, aiming to mobilise the immense reservoir of support amongst the broader working population, in Ireland and internationally, who face the same pressures on their living standard from the same source—the breakdown of world capitalism.

Help Leonard Peltier win his Freedom !!!

We have a unique situation; a rare moment in history; where Leonard may have a chance at a pardon, or at the very least, release, by the next president who has a strong history paralleling the plight of the American Indian. If Obama does not pardon Leonard he will die in prison for a crime he did not commit.

President Clinton was going to pardon him when he left office, but 150 fully armed FBI agents cordoned off the White House in a silent threat. Clinton did not pardon Leonard, but he did pardon a convicted drug dealer who was involved with his brother.

For those who do not know who Leonard Peltier is, he is an American Indian, the Lokota tribe, who was arrested and convicted of murdering two FBI agents, an act which even the prosecuting attorney admitted in open court, and recorded in the court... "We do not know who killed the two agents, but someone has to pay."

One other point, Leonard was convicted on the sole tesitmony of a mentally unstable woman, who was not present at the incident at Oglala. When Leonard won a new trial, the same judge who allowed this woman to testify against Leonard, denied her from testifying on Leonard's behalf, based upon her being "unfit to give testimony".

These two points alone should raise the democratic flag of "guilty beyond a shadow of doubt".

That is all I wanted to say. If you can find it in your heart to inquire, just Google Leonard Peltier, and you will find vast references.

My purpose in bringing this to your attention is to ask that you write a letter in Leonard's support.

Thursday afternoon, we were notified that Leonard would be
transferred on Monday. We don't know which facility he will be
assigned to, but we want to ask everyone to email/fax the officials
at the Federal Bureau of Prisons Designation and Sentence Computation
Center (DSCC) in Grand Prairie, TX.

    Email: GRA-DSC/PolicyCorrespondence&AdminRemedies@bop.gov
    /> Fax to: 972-352-4395

    Re: Leonard Peltier 89637-132

Inform them the Turtle Mountain Tribal Council has passed a
resolution to have Leonard there. In addition, there are two other
federal facilities, Sandstone, MN & Oxford, WI, which Leonard could
be assigned to which will allow his relatives to come and see him.

This transfer will offset his parole hearing scheduled for February,
and we won't have any information until Leonard has arrived at his
    next facility.

I would also ask you to send up a prayer for my brother, along with
your messages supporting his transfer to these locations. We still
have his parole and clemency to concentrate on after he arrives
at what our family hopes will be the last stop of our 33-year-old
nightmare. I can't begin to imagine the insanity of being locked
away for so long, and the whole time you know you are innocent as
the rest of the world outside of America does.

This nightmare has to end now and it is going to take each and
everyone one of you to make an active stand to help end it. For years
we have said that Leonard could have been any one of you. Anyone
with a conscience, heart and soul who dares to speak up against
the government could end up falsely imprisoned or dead.

My brother was in South Dakota that day to help provide safety to
a community of Elders and traditional people. He and his friends
in the American Indian Movement were asked to come there. Leonard
didn't have to, but he is a very unselfish person, so without
regard to his own safety, he went to Oglala. Everyone can see the
Robert Redford film "Incident at Oglala", and Leonard's trials,
for all of the details about what happened there.

This February 6th will mark 33 years since his arrest and so much
has happened. A generation has been born and is having children,
many of Leonard's friends and family has passed on, and the world
has moved on. Maybe that is a way to understand what it feels to be
falsely imprisoned and to live a nightmare. A life sentence is really
a sentence of death. And being innocent is a 24/7 torture. All you
have to look forward to is another day like yesterday with tomorrow
    being no better.

My brother has two life sentences to look forward through, and it
is his belief, as well as mine, that he will come home. Keep sending
us your prayers and support so that we can break down those walls!

    Thank you,

    FREEDOM FOR TERRY McCAFFERTY !

    IRISH FREEDOM COMMITTEE NEWSLIST

    Thursday December 25, 2008

    TERRY McCAFFERTY INTERNMENT HIGHLY SUSPECT

The Irish Freedom Committee has received further information regarding the December 22 arrest of Terry McCafferty, confirming our earlysuspicions that this is merely the final step in an on-going campaignof harassment and persecution by British security forces since his November release.

As Terry and his wife Martine returned to Belfast airport in the early hours of Monday morning, from a long-awaited holiday to the Canary Islands, they were confronted and surrounded by police - one of whom audibly said "this is them here". Without explanation, Terry was led away as five police surrounded Martine, refusing to allow her to go with him as he was taken away. After repeated appeals to find out why her husband was being detained, Martine was bizarrely told by police that Terry's "license was revoked" – meaning that he would be sent back to prison to serve six more years of his full sentence. When she asked why, police told her "we don't have to explain that to you"; and that he was being taken to Antrim police barracks to be sent back to Maghaberry prison in the morning.

The Irish Freedom Committee asks; how is it that police can make this determination, where no crime has been committed? We can only view this arrest as highly suspect, considering the pointedly unusual circumstances and timing of these events.

Terry was taken on Monday to Maghaberry Gaol, where he had been finally discharged after over six years' internment only weeks before. Instead of being returned to Roe House, where he had been housed with other Irish republican political prisoners; on Monday he was put in with the criminal population. Terry immediately refused food, demanding to be housed with political prisoners. After many efforts outside the prison, Terry was moved to Roe house at the end of the day on Monday.

Since his release, Terry has lived an exemplar life trying to catch upon missed time with his family of five boys and Martine. As she told us, "He goes to bed at 8:00, that's what he's used to inside. He'staken a course with ex-POWs. He's spending time with the kids."

On his last Christmas home, while on early release, police repeatedly knocked at their door after one in the morning; well after he and his family were asleep. Martine tells us, "He was tortured. It was mental abuse."

Yet since his release only weeks ago, "Terry's watched 24-7; peeler sare parked outside the door".

This month several family members were stopped and cars searched while driving on errands, including a young son who had just earned his drivers certificate. Martine tells us, "They are trying to break the family." Anyone who knows Martine and McCaff, knows this is next to impossible.

On this being Terry's first chance out in over six years to have a normal Christmas with his family of five young boys, only the most base and perverse reasons apply to this kind of security forces harassment.

"This was well planned to mess up Christmas", Martine tells us. "It's a kick in the teeth. It's a form of internment – back to the 60's and 70's."

The Irish Freedom Committee views the circumstances and timing of Terry's arrest as highly suspect. On what 'information' and with what powers can police revoke the license of a released republican prisoner, where no crime has been committed? Is this merely a sick ploy to take this man away from his family for another Christmas, knowing full well that his lawyers' offices will be closed throughout the Christmas and New Years' holidays?

Martine has told us, "If I have to travel to every county of Ireland to tell this story, I will."

Please watch for more details, and recommended actions for US supporters, in coming days.

    JUSTICE FOR TERRY McCAFFERTY

    32 County Sovereignty Movement
    22/12/2008

    FREE TERRY McCAFFERTY NOW

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement call for the immediate release of North Belfast Republican Terry McCafferty who was returned to Maghaberry gaol last night just four weeks after being released having served half of a 12 year sentence for his part in Republican activity in Belfast.

Terry McCafferty was returning from a holiday in Spain with his family when he was arrested and told he was being returned to Maghaberry having had his license revoked by British secretary of state Paul Goggins.

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement view this action as blatant harassment of a Republican and his family just before Christmas. We have little doubt that there is no reason to revoke Terry's license and we believe it may be a spiteful reaction to the release of the Derry 4 last Friday. It is quite clear that MI5 did not get the result they wanted in the Special Criminal Court in Dublin and they have ordered that Terry be imprisoned due to the fact that he has been recently released and his first Christmas with his family for years is approaching, It was designed to cause maximum misery to Republicans

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement call on all Republicans to unite to ensure that this spiteful action be overturned immediately.

    Noel Maguire Update

    Noel Maguire Update

    a cairde

Last week we sent emails to each and every TD in the Dail drawing their attention to Noels case and asking them to intervene to bring Noel home, We have had a lot of favorable results a few members have tabled parliamentary questions to Minister For Justice regarding Ministerial action in this case. We have followed up on the responses by email and phone; we thank our members and friends who wrote on Noels behalf.

Last week Noel was visited by embassy official Tony McCullagh, McCullagh told Noel the Justice Ministry were not likely to repatriate him because he is separated from Sharon (His Wife) she is not considered to be his next of kin - and as both his children are under eighteen she is looked on as their custodian. This is an absurd viewpoint and seems to now strip Noel of his fatherhood as well as his rights as an Irish citizen to be moved closer to his family, we will be contacting Fathers Rights groups and seek their help in challenging this view held by the Irish Government.

But what it does mean now is Noel is not likely to see his two children until he is eventually released - and that's years away why are the children being punished by this persistent refusal to repatriate Noel to within easy visiting distance of them.

It is a sad reflection on a Government that have lost any sense of doing the right thing as the humane and morally correct decision would be think of Noels children and not punish them. His children have a father; the Minister is standing in the way of allowing any relationship to be built and his reasoning is flawed.

This week we are targeting the Media who are conspicuous in their absence on Noels case despite the humanitarian aspect of the case, a father who is being denied the opportunity to be closer to his children and not having seen them for 9 years. We have sent the following to every media outlet we were able to find in Ireland, Europe, US, Canada and Australia, we ask that our members and friends write their own letters to their local papers pointing out the facts of Noels case.

We are also putting out Noels story and the facts on the case to Indy media around the world. Please take a few moments to write to your local media and express disgust at the way he is being treated.

Need help with this or any questions please contact friendsofnoelmaguir e@live.com

    ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

    TO MEDIA

We are drawing the media's attention to the fact that the Irish Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform Dermot Ahern has once again denied an Irish citizen the ability to return home to serve his sentence in an Irish Jail which is allowed for under a European directive. The friends of Noel Maguire are a group of concerned people who have came together to right this wrong. Noel is being denied repatriation on the basis of a lie, that being he has closer ties to the Britain than to Ireland. Noel's immediate kin live in Carlow. All the information is available on our website: http://friendsofnoe lmaguire. webnode.com/

Last week, our members and supporters wrote to each and every TD of the 30th Dail asking them to intervene in Noel Maguire's case - if not for Noel, then for the sake of his children who have not seen their father in over 9 years. We have received some favorable responses. This is a humanitarian story - the politics are of little or no relevance. It is about allowing an Irish citizen the opportunity to return to Ireland and attempt to build a relationship with his children. Please allow us to address your readers with the following letter.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Friends of Noel Maguire

    ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

    Dear Editor:

Through your paper, may we draw your reader's attention to the case of Noel Maguire? Noel Maguire has been refused again for repatriation (The ability to be repatriated to the country of your citizenship to serve a prison sentence on humanitarian grounds as laid down by the European Directive). He has been fighting to be returned home for over 5 years; all his co-accused have already been repatriated to Ireland.

The Irish authorities claim wrongly that Noel has closer ties to the United Kingdom than to an Irish jurisdiction despite Noel's having a wife, and a son and daughter, living in County Carlow. This is Noel's immediate kith and kin.

The lack of compassion shown by the Minister responsible in refusing Noel's request to be closer to his wife and 2 children is disconcerting and very cavalier. For a Minister elected to look out for the well being of all Irish citizens, in this case he has abandoned the opportunity to reunite a family and allow them some chance at rebuilding their lives, as is the purpose of the European Repatriation directive.

Noel should be repatriated on the following grounds:

He is an Irish citizen and holds a current Irish passport, issued in Dublin.

He easily qualifies for repatriation under the European directive, which allows prisoners to be moved back to their own country to serve their sentence closer to their family for purely humanitarian reasons.

There was an attempt to murder Noel in 2006 in which he received serious knife wounds. If left alone and isolated his life would be constantly under threat! His physical and mental well being is in jeopardy if the Irish Government refuses him the right to be brought home to serve his sentence in an Irish Jail.

He has not seen his children in 9 years.
