Tara Light : Halloween 2007 - The source and origin of Halloween

Dear Friends,

We have a wonderful vision to create a light shield around the Hill of Tara complex. The idea is to use high powered focused beams the same as used at the WTC memorial to create a light shield around the Tara Complex in order to create awareness that this valley needs to be protected from the development of the M3 motorway right though the heart of the complex.

The shield will consist of 4 main beams that will point , south, east , north and west initially that will move into position to join an upright beam at the centre.

Creating a shield of approximately 4 km in diameter that can been seen over a great distance that will create a beautiful image that can be beamed around the world. The night that this will happen on is Halloween the Celtic New Year.

Many different groups are free to bring in their own resources to mark the occasion.

The light beams and subsequent logistical resources are quite expensive and will cost a total of 13,000 Euro. They are the most powerful lighting beams in the world and relatively speaking for the huge impact they will present, the cost is small. So far 6 donations have been kindly guaranteed to make this happen in the order of 500 Euro.

We only need 14 More. For those who have already pledged 500 euro they feel it an honor to be involved in this amazing , important and unusual concept.

If you wish to pledge 500 Euro then please add your name to list, for bigger donations one can also donate one of the main beams; the Northern Light, The Southern Light, The Western Light, The Easter Light or the Central Beam.

We thank all our brothers and sisters for their involvement and generosity and welcome you with open arms to be part of this fantastic experience.

Best wishes
The TaraWatch crew and Friends

Visual Experience

Tara Light will consist of an elaborate light show with beams of white light illuminating Tara valley the home and source of the Celtic Halloween festival (the Celtic New Year), while a live radio broadcast will provide an audio backdrop to those viewing the event from Tara and others tuning in around the valley, surrounding area, Ireland and beyond.

There will be several high intensity focused light beams taking various forms in creating a protective light shield around the Tara complex with individual illuminations of key sacred sites that are directly affected by the current route plan of the M3 motorway.

With the Hill of Tara forming the centerpiece, lights will be located at the key defensive forts surrounding Tara, which form the Tara complex, as follows:

The objective of the lighting event is to show the positioning and significant quantity of sacred sites throughout the complex, in relation to the motorway route proximity and to show the importance of immediately halting the destruction to maintain the integrity, balance and beauty that has existed here for over 5000 years of history.

There is now overwhelming opposition to the proposed route including:

- The World Monuments Fund in June 2007 placed the Hill of Tara archeological landscape onto the List of 100 Most Endangered Sites.

- The European Commission sent a Reasoned Opinion to the Irish government in June 2007 stating that they firmly believe that the decision to demolish the Lismullin national monument is contrary to EU law.

The European Commission will be visiting Ireland in mid-September and this event will be a dramatic prelude.

- 70 % of Irish people are against the current M3 route according to a national poll conducted in 2005.

There are at least 38 major sites between Navan and Dunshauglin that are being directly impacted by the current route of the motorway. At least 20 of these lye within the Tara complex which are now under threat along with 100s of additional Celtic and Neolithic sites in the area.

Tara a very sacred place is the traditional seat of power in Ireland, where many of the high kings were crowned.

It is said that from the Hill of Tara that one can see reference points of 16 counties on a clear day. This is perhaps why it was also such an important place of communication for the early High Kings as they lit their signal fires. Halloween is of course even more significant here as it has its roots in Ireland and in this valley.

There are many ancient tools in the area for measuring time and it is firmly believed that region was the defining point and source of the Celtic new years eve which is now known and still celebrated in various forms as Samhain / Halloween.

The event will begin slowly with the main high intensity focused light beams pointing out in a circle away from Tara (the “Fan”) and they will move slowly inwards towards Tara, almost like an invitation of light reaching out across the country, a mysterious and dynamic awe-inspiring spectacle.

Local area lighting will be used to illuminate several of the 12 key surrounding sites one by one as a presenter from a vantage point will physically point out each monument and give a brief historical account as they are lit up.

Radio Tara

This visual presentation will toggle between a live concert offsite, consisting of narrative, music and poetry that will be merged together into one large global Halloween presentation. This will be the first large scale geographical multimedia event of its kind.

The concert will be broadcast on FM radio so people can bring radio receivers and listen to the concert and presentation from anywhere in the valley and the local counties while observing the light show. A live web broadcast will also go out around the world and global television stations will be given a live feed to spread the message of Tara on Halloween night.

Following the key light individual sculptures the light show will finish with several high intensity focused light beams merging together high above in the sky, creating a protective white layer of light around the complex from the surrounding vantage points, with one straight vertical beam coming out of Tara. The light shield will be held for a relatively long period in a magnificent silent pause (The “God” Shot), a moment of visual brilliance. It will also show the clear relationship between the sites, as well as the fact that the motorway (if completed) would be visible from the Hill of Tara, contrary to what the NRA (National Roads Authority) have claimed.

The ‘Radio Tara’ end of the event will be broadcast in conjunction with a local / national radio station. Many musicians have already pledged their support to the Tara campaign, including Liam O Maonlai of Hothouse Flowers, Eamon Carr of Horslips, Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains, Paddy Casey, The Waterboys, Kila, Mundy, Erin McKeown, Cora Venus Lunny, Laoise Kelly, The Walls and Camille O’Sullivan. In addition Irish Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon and celebrated Author Colm Toibin have written in opposition to the current plan.
