<span style="font-size: large;">A Grammy award winning songwriter who splits her time between New York City and Dublin is putting together an Irish cultural festival to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The first CualaNYC kicks off on Tuesday. The two-month festival hosts over 35 events, including a performance of a William Butler Yeats play on the beach in Coney Island, Irish poetry performances on NY Waterway’s East River Ferry and a music festival at the Knockdown Center in Queens.</span></div>

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border-image-outset: initial; border-image-repeat: initial; border-image-slice: initial; border-image-source: initial; border-image-width: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 600px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Susan McKeown, CualaNYC’s founder, said it was only natural that celebrating the Rising — a key moment in the fight for Irish independence — would involve the city.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">“I was inspired by the amount of New York history related to the Rising, from the fact that two of the rebel leaders, James Connolly and U.S. citizen Thomas Clarke, lived in the Bronx and Brooklyn, to the immense connections with the labor movement,” said McKeown, 49. “It's known now that the Rising wouldn't have happened without New York.”</span></div>

Sands famously led a hunger strike against conditions inside Northern Ireland’s notorious H Blocks that made him an international icon. Seeing himself as a soldier in a conflict, he died for the right to be recognised as a political prisoner. The film’s narrative spine is comprised of Sands’ own words, drawn from his hunger strike diary, a unique insight into the man and his beliefs as he embarked on his final journey.</div>

These Twin City treble makers and rhythm rapscallions have yet again awakened me from my doldrums, breathing new life into the term "Celtic Rock", and once again restored my faith in humanity and old school merry- making.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFIitantBxH6du2To13od2jD2mURixEuZh4nihIwl_M3MsLLK1eQOHg5FBXRaN5WC1e6DdAkCkQOpII11XoMsXv5l1Ynzd5nhLKCwvf9eI9RK8SSBB_Xi1A_ucLktWRJe_3o-r/s1600/a2169005889_10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFIitantBxH6du2To13od2jD2mURixEuZh4nihIwl_M3MsLLK1eQOHg5FBXRaN5WC1e6DdAkCkQOpII11XoMsXv5l1Ynzd5nhLKCwvf9eI9RK8SSBB_Xi1A_ucLktWRJe_3o-r/s640/a2169005889_10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Beginning a mighty album with a high velocity ode to the Prohibition years, the album's title track, "Whiskey Outlaws" gallops in like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and with a Rockabilly ferocity that compliments The Langer's </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ball tried and tested Celtic Rock & Reel, this humdinger will really get you off your proverbial arse as you pogo your head through the ceiling and these St. Paul brigands will not only raise the rafters but get you dancing to their </div>
glorious fusion of Roots Rock & Roll, 70's era Punk Rock, and old time rowdy sing-a-long Irish drinking songs, because :<br />
<br />
<i><b> "There's nothing you can do but sit there in wait</b></i><br />
<i><b> Devil's spawn they sprung from Hell,</b></i><br />
<i><b> Kicking down the gate</b></i><br />
<i><b> Blood and guts and whiskey is their intoxicate.."</b></i><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, "World Turned Upside Down" is resuscitated from the folk song graveyard, reinvigorated by the prowess of these crazy Minnesotans, dug up from the earth as it were, with a stellar cover of this classic Leon Rosselson tune. (Although this 1960 hit may be loosely based on the 1640 English workers ballad written as a protest against the policies of Parliament regarding Christmas celebrations) A rousing heartfelt tune that no bunch of musicians could have done a better version of and one that will have you singing along at the top of your lungs, pumping your fist, demanding more and reminding you (whether your collar be blue or white) who it is that has built the world around you - the indomitable worker - and nurtured it over the ages. Fair play ye Langers ! This really is one of the best versions of this old Diggers anthem that I've heard and sung along to yet.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Afterwards, "Jug of This" really takes you away from the daily turmoil and tragedy of the modern world, transporting you to a simpler time where all that matters is good music, good friends and a barrel of the brewers finest. Come on folks, don't dismay, quaff of the intoxicating harmonies and rhythms of The Langer's Ball and forget your cares and the unpaid electricity bill and bar tab while these Minnesotan merry makers help you escape from it all for a few magical moments. Friends, don't let your throat stay dry, heed the wise words of The Langer's Ball and let their mirthful melodies take you away :</div>
<br />
<i><b> "Turn me into a fish and let me swim in a jug of this"</b></i><br />
<br />
<span style="text-align: justify;"> Next, "Drinking for Two" keeps the high spirits soaring above the modern miasma, raising the rafters, lifting your own chin and never failing to make you grin at the devilish art that The Langer's Ball are so well known for crafting </span><span style="text-align: justify;">and delivering to you like an illegal cask of Connemara's finest poitín. I love the way The Langer's Ball can go from bluesy ballads of the dewy-eyed and the heartbroken to the boisterous and rip-roaring rhythms of the pub or the Punk </span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rock pit, and then back to the battlefields of love and loss, to only astonish you in a few short seconds with another musical thunderbolt shaking the ground beneath your feet like an earthquake on the San Andreas Fault. Flawless, rowdy, blitheful and absolutely unique, The Langer's Ball will never disappoint.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Gods Gonna Cut You Down" next shows you the derring-do of a band not afraid to tackle legendary songs or hot hits written and composed by peerless musicians like Johnny Cash. Many bands botch it when it comes to covering a hit (countless covers of Pogues songs comes to mind) but not The Langer's Ball. Their rendition of this old Johnny Cash classic is nothing short of superb.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, "Bottoms Up" showcases the diverse prowess of these mighty Minnesotans, as the band gets you up on the dance floor with a rousing chorus and a Slavic spirit that would make Gogol Bordello or Balkan Beat Box proud. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Afterwards, The Langer's Ball prove to the world that they can cover a Horslips classic without embarrassment. A mighty feat indeed. While I am not going to claim that I prefer this version over the original, it was nonethless a valiant attempt and for that I tip my hat to thee, Langer's Ball. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, "The One", shows the bands depth and grace, capturing an ambiance of love and loss and the dangerous position oneself can find themselves in, when they are betting all their odds against a lost cause. This is an exemplary tune and shines a radiance on the excellence of a Celtic Rock band that defies all expectations and soars high above like a storm crow amidst the monsoon rains and impending gale.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Afterwards, "Mick McGuire" is another pub sing-a-long that reaffirms the loyalty to tradition that is such a part of The Langer's Ball. Michael Sturm's exuberant vocals and his and Danny McDermott's great guitar work, as well as the storming drumming of Colin McCowan and Hannah Rediske's pennywhistle and backing vocals, complimented by the resounding throb of bassist Lance "Lam" Gams, make this a fine version of one of the best pub sing-a-longs there ever was.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And in case you imagined all this fun was coming to and end, "Cork Dry Gin" keeps us tipsy and dancing our toes off with another definite crowd-pleaser by St. Paul's finest. And in case you're not into drinking songs than I still think you will surprise yourself by singing along to this catchy and jubilant landlubber shanty.</div>
<br />
Right after, The Langer's Ball get in their time machine and take us back to the Roaring Twenties, with Mort Dixon and Harry M. Woods 1927 hit, "I"m Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover", taking us back to those Tin Pan Alley days and <span style="text-align: justify;">getting us ready for St. Paddy's carousing. And once again, another Langer's Ball cover that doesn't fail to amaze me. In fact, I think this is the best version of the hit I've heard yet. And if that's not brilliant enough for you, the addition of a superb rendition of 1926 favorite "Bye Bye Blackbird" definitely shall. And with these marvelous covers you are again mesmerized and amazed by the transcendent accordion accomplishments of Hannah Rediske. Fair play indeed.</span><br />
<br />
Concluding a stunning and unrivaled album, The Langer's Ball "Whiskey Outlaws" couldn't have had a better swan song for a true gem than "Pigeon at the Gate", a great tribute to traditional music and Celtic sounds.<br />
<br />
Whatever you decide to spend your money on this year, please don't scrimp when it comes to supporting some of the best musicians the world has known, and buy The Langer's Ball "Whiskey Outlaws" if it's the last thing you do.<br />

Ireland’s greatest export has been her people and for centuries, emigration and exile have been harsh, repeating themes of Irish history.<br /> <br />An astounding array of artists from Ireland and Australia gather in a moving celebration of the Irish impact on Australian life. Through abundant literature, music, poetry and art, as well as a keen hunger for justice, the Irish spirit has stamped itself on the evolving culture of Australia.<br /> <br />Almost a third of all Australians claim some degree of Irish descent, so it's timely to reflect upon this history in the centenary year of the 1916 Easter Uprising, the catalyst for Ireland’s nationhood. The enduring influence on Australian history, music and politics is recounted through rich imagery and stirring performances in this special concert event.<br /> <br />There is no denying the contribution that the Irish have made to Australian life. It's certainly varied but rarely dull.</div>

Describing discrimination against Travellers as "the last acceptable form of racism," he says nothing has changed for his people in the last hundred years when Irish volunteers, including his great grandfather, Patrick Ward, put their lives on the line for their country. Patrick, from Tuam, Co Galway, was only 16 when he joined the garrison at Roe's Distillery in Dublin during the Easter Rising.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"He and his uncle and cousin were among those who fought for the promise of a socialist republic where all people would be treated equally, as set out in the Proclamation," says John.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"And look at us now, Travellers living in Third World conditions in a First World country, on sites without electricity, families evicted and told to put their children into care… Where's the equality in that?"</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px;">
John's inspiration comes from his great grandfather, whose story aroused in him a passion for history and social justice.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"Patrick was fearless. At 14, when his father and older brother went to fight in the First World War, he got himself a fake birth certificate and went to Coventry to join them, but his father sent him home. A few months later, his father and brother were killed in action.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"After the Rising, Patrick was jailed along with the other rebels, and he served a further 18 months in prison after fighting against the Treaty in the War of Independence. I'd heard a bit about him growing up, but when I saw a picture of him on the wall of a Travellers' centre in Balbriggan, I asked my grandfather to tell me more.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"Then I did some research of my own online and as I got to know more about Patrick Ward, I couldn't have been more proud. He had warrior blood in his veins. He had a profound effect on me."</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
After his imprisonment, Patrick went back on the road. He married a half-settled, half-Traveller woman called Bridget and they had 10 children, two of whom died in infancy. But he came to a tragic end when, in 1942, while camping in Athlone, the local landowner, Joseph Lee, accused him of rabbit-snaring.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"This was later proved to be untrue," says John. "Somebody else was found to have been snaring rabbits on the estate, but Lee ordered him to leave. They argued - Patrick protested he needed time - but Lee was having none of it. He shot him dead.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px;">
"In his statement Lee said, 'I killed a tinker today. I lost the head. I killed him.' Later he retracted that statement and said it was an accident. He got six months for killing my great-grandfather. Six months! After everything Patrick had done for his country."</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
Bridget went back to Dublin and raised her family in Summerhill in the city centre. Some of her children stayed and some went back on the road, including John's grandfather, Paddy. John himself was born in London and a year later his parents returned to Ireland.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"We lived in camps, mostly in the Coolock area of Dublin, where I live today. I came back here recently after six years of living in a house. I like having extended family around and being surrounded by people I trust. In my line of work, you get noticed by the public and that attention can turn some people into hot air balloons. It feeds the ego. Travellers wouldn't let you away with any nonsense. We're grounded, because we know who we are and we're proud of it."</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
Acting is not a common career path in the Travelling community, but John hopes his own success will pave the way for other young Travellers to tread the boards.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"Travellers are the best storytellers in the world! And acting is a form of storytelling too, so I'm not surprised I was drawn to it."</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
Straight out of acting school, John landed the lead role in the film, King of the Travellers, then along came Love/Hate, and this year the 26-year-old has more exciting projects in the pipeline, including an RTE documentary in March called The K Word, about relationships between Travellers and the settled community. He's also turned his hand to screenwriting and his film, Cardboard Gangsters, premieres this summer.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"It's about young lads who start out as low-level drug dealers. I play the lead role, Jay, who falls on hard times when his girlfriend becomes pregnant and his mother's house is taken away. He starts dealing heroin, and comes into conflict with the local kingpin. It's a gangster movie that's rooted in social realism.</div>
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 14.6667px;">My great grandfather made me politically aware and that informs a lot of what I do. I'm massively inspired by him."</span></div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px;">
That inspiration extends to using his celebrity to train the spotlight on the cause of the Travelling community.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"Travellers are an ethnic minority and we want to be recognised as such, here in our country of origin. We have a cultural tradition of our own and a shared history that distinguishes us from other groups, yet successive Irish governments deny what the UK, USA and other countries recognise as a distinct ethnic group.</div>
</div>
<div class="p402_hide" style="margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">
"They try to assimilate us into the settled community and destroy our culture, but we won't be broken. The promise of a just and equal society that Patrick and his comrades fought for in 1916 has not yet been realised, but I haven't given up hope."</div>

A FORMER IRA hunger striker will give the oration at the main Eirigi commemoration to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
Belfast republican Bernard Fox spent 33 days on hunger strike in 1981 and served a total of 22 years as an IRA prisoner during the Troubles.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
Previously he spoke at an Eirigi commemoration in 2007 to mark the 90th anniversary of the death of hunger striker Thomas Ashe.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
In 2013 a court ruled that the use of some of ‘stop and search’ powers on Mr Fox by the PSNI was unlawful.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
The parade will also be addressed by former republican prisoner Liam McCotter.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
South Derry native Sharon Pickering is also expected to speak at the event which will be held on Easter Monday.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
Organised by the Irish Republican Commemoration Committee, the parade will start close to the former Falls Road home of 1916 leader James Connolly in Belfast before making its way to Milltown cemetery where the main commemoration will be held at the Harbinson plot.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 13px;">
A spokesman for the Irish Republican Commemoration Committee said: “One hundred years after 1916, it is a stark but inescapable reality that the vision, aspirations and objectives of those who gave their lives have still to be achieved.”</div>

We should in this issue wish all our readers a “Happy New Year”. We do so wish them. But such a wish rings better when it is accompanied by a belief that the wish may be realised, and at the present moment the signs of a Happy New Year are none too plentiful.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Over all the world the shadow of war lies heavy on the hearts of every lover of humankind. Over a great part of the world war itself is daily taking its toll, and the gashed and mangled limbs of many thousands are daily scattered abroad, an affront to the sight of God and man. In the British Empire, of which we are unluckily a part, the ruling class has taken the opportunity provided by the war to make a deadly onslaught upon all the rights and liberties acquired by labour in a century of struggling; and found the leaders of labour as a rule only too ready to yield to the attack and surrender the position they ought to have given their lives to hold. Were the war to end tomorrow the working class of these islands would be immediately launched into a bitter fight to resist the attempt of the capitalist class to make permanent all the concessions the too pliant trade union leaders have been swindled into conceding upon the plea of war emergencies. In addition, the whole system of industry has been moulded anew in many of its most important branches. Division of labour has been pushed to an extent hitherto undreamed of. Women have been harnessed to the wheels of production in places and at operations hitherto performed solely by men – and so harnessed with none of the rights with which men safeguarded their positions – and the whole industrial population has been made accustomed to browbeating and driving from those set in authority.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
The civil rights of the people have gone, and the ruling class has succeeded in so familiarising the multitude with thoughts of slaughter and bloodshed that the killing of workers on strike will no longer send even a thrill through the nation.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Peace will send home millions of men; will dislocate all industry so that those millions will find little employment and will thus be compelled to compete fiercely for work at any price. The terrible taxation caused by the war will send up and keep up the price of everything, whilst the misery of the returned soldier looking for work will hammer down wages.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Nationally Ireland has seen herself betrayed by one set of politicians, her children bartered for sale as hired assassins in the service of her ancient and present enemy. The coming year may see her still linked to that enemy once more at peace with the world, and the “Irish Nation” finally relegated to the mere status of a gallant tradition, as little useful politically as the Jacobite tradition is to Scotland. With England at peace that country will possess an army of at least one million men, veteran soldiers of the greatest war of all the ages, and when that time arrives the Irish question will trouble England as little as the rivalries of Lancashire and Yorkshire.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
With an army of two veteran soldiers for every adult male in Ireland there will no longer be an Irish cause for any uneasiness to the rulers of the British Empire.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
A happy new year! Ah, well! Our readers are, we hope, rebels in heart, and hence may rebel even at our own picture of the future. If that is so let us remind them that opportunities are for those who seize them, and that the coming year may be as bright as we choose to make it. We have sketched out the future as it awaits the slave who fears death more than slavery. For those who choose to advance to meet Fate determined to mould it to their purpose that future may be as bright as our picture is dark.</div>

<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: medium;">"Since the English occupation, we have had little or no national art in Ireland at all, and there is not the slightest chance of our ever having it until we get that right of legislative independence, so unjustly robbed from us, until we are really an Irish Nation --- nation for whose constitutional liberty Henry Grattan lived and died. There is, however, one art which no tyranny can kill and no penal laws can stifle --- the art of poetry. An art which is one of the supreme triumphs of the race to which we belong. The poetry and music of Ireland have been not merely the luxury of the rich, but the very bulwark of patriotism, the very seed and flower of liberty."</span></div>

<li><span style="font-size: large;">For all those who've enjoyed listening to Radio Rebel Gael over the
years, I wanted to point out that I have cancelled the Radio Rebel Gael
podomatic website and service, due to what I feel are irreconcilable differences between Radio Rebel Gael and what I feel are
the unscrupulous business practices of Podomatic Inc. Like most
Corporate entities , Podomatic are not what they seem to be, and seem to
have betrayed the very nature of podcasting and it's whole opportunity
for t<span class="text_exposed_show">he common people to have the
freedom to broadcast FREE of cost. Podomatic seems to be more
interested in joining in with the rest of the Corporate Swine to rob and
pillage the general public. AS A RESULT, Radio Rebel Gael will now
podcast in video format, exclusively on our new, handy dandy Radio Rebel
Gael Youtube channell . Subscribe and tune in friends, fans, comrades
and musicians:</span></span></li>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLK1_wL96bXxHlOVyAH0YmLICBvj9HDgOBJAF2vwgOAxZ2JVfh68w1Jw86Wb2SdrBoWxmV0iz6k7EWKBqFibbztmGZroi3yCfifRid9nPtDOVMbq_Z4jcIyzSO7SSroJatZJRD/s1600/LaughingHistorically-ChristopherColumbusWasARealJerk438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLK1_wL96bXxHlOVyAH0YmLICBvj9HDgOBJAF2vwgOAxZ2JVfh68w1Jw86Wb2SdrBoWxmV0iz6k7EWKBqFibbztmGZroi3yCfifRid9nPtDOVMbq_Z4jcIyzSO7SSroJatZJRD/s400/LaughingHistorically-ChristopherColumbusWasARealJerk438.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"> British historian Cecil Roth is another one of these apologists for the British Empire, who is of course, now also an apologist for the other European Imperialists, who profitted so greatly from theexploitation, mass murder , displacement, and enslavement of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, but now this British Zionist is rewriting the blood soaked legacy of Christopher Columbus as "Columbus Philanthropist & Gentle Soul", that's right folks, he is now claiming that Columbus was not a Genocidal, power trippin', racist Imperialist, but a philanthropist who gave his money to the poor, and was really a swell chap. Roth's theory is that Columbus wasn't a servant of the Crown of Spain and the main protagonist, and man that began the grim history of centuries of Conquistador-inspired genocide, slavery, mass murder, and the displacement of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, no, claims this British historian, he was really Jewish and just wanted to establish a Jewish homeland in the Americas so the Jews could escape the anti-semitism of Europe.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Now the anti-semitism and pogroms of Europe are well established, so I am not discounting those historical facts, however, these pogroms closely resemble Columbus' own treatment of the "Indians" that he encountered and I seriously do not believe in Cecil Roth's revisionism, and if you do your homework, you will discover that Columbus, , whether or not he was actually Jewish, was far from a "swell chap" or "philanthropist", and whom kept a detailed journal of his travels to the Americas, where he routinely talks about cutting off the ears of the natives, having them flogged and killed, and so forth, for "crimes" such as "stealing" a piece of fruit. Now, how the natives could actually be "stealing" the fruit that was the natural produce of their native home, well, only a British historian or racist revisionist could really come to such an unsound conclusion. Worse than that, a school of "thought" is now is pushing this idea that Columbus couldn't have been that bad because he "might have been a Jew". Only the dim witted could really go along with such garbage. It's an insult to any intelligent scholar and even more so of an insult to all of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, raped, murdered, and enslaved by the Columbus and his ilk, and the Conquistadors, that followed in his foot steps. And a man is responsible for his deeds, no matter what religion he subscribes to.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I will conclude with some details of what it was like to live as an indigenous person, when Columbus and his brothers governed Santo Domingo,, from Giles Tremlett' s "Lost document reveals Columbus as tyrant of the Caribbean" :</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 15.4559993743896px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"Christopher Columbus, the man credited with discovering the Americas, was a greedy and vindictive tyrant who saved some of his most violent punishments for his own followers, according to a document uncovered by Spanish historians.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 15.4559993743896px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 15.4559993743896px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">As governor and viceroy of the Indies, Columbus imposed iron discipline on the first Spanish colony in the Americas, in what is now the Caribbean country of Dominican Republic. Punishments included cutting off people's ears and noses, parading women naked through the streets and selling them into slavery.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"Columbus' government was characterised by a form of tyranny," Consuelo Varela, a Spanish historian who has seen the document, told journalists.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">One man caught stealing corn had his nose and ears cut off, was placed in shackles and was then auctioned off as a slave. A woman who dared to suggest that Columbus was of lowly birth was punished by his brother Bartolomé, who had also travelled to the Caribbean. She was stripped naked and paraded around the colony on the back of a mule.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"Bartolomé ordered that her tongue be cut out," said Ms Varela. "Christopher congratulated him for defending the family."</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"The document also describes how Columbus put down native unrest and revolt; he first ordered a brutal crackdown in which many natives were killed and then paraded their dismembered bodies through the streets in an attempt to discourage further rebellion." <span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br />Says Malawian Professor of Political Science</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">James Connolly wasn't a big fan of "charity" and aid organizations, and while reading "Dark Star Safari" (P.Theroux), I came across the insightful words of Georgetown Professor of Political Science and Malawi native, Dr. Jonathan Banda, more or less echoing the same ideas regarding charity and aid (whether foreign or domestic) that were once spoken by the late James Connolly, upon his return to his native Malawi<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;"> :</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; display: inline; line-height: 15.4559993743896px;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"...Dr. Jonathan Banda didn't get the job. He was sure the reasons for his being turned down were political. He said that if he had praised the government and the ruling party, they would have hired him.</span></div>
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
Thinking of what the ambassador had told me, I said, 'A diplomat told me there is no political terror anymore. Is that true?'</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
'Maybe not , but there is political pressure of a very insidious sort.'</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
He seemed so outspoken I asked him the questions about charities and aid agencies that had been nagging at me. The agents of virtue in white Land Rovers ---- what were they changing?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
'Not much, because all aid is political', he said. 'When this country became independent it had very few institutions. It still doesn't have many. The donors aren't contributing to development. They maintain the status quo. Politicians love that, because they hate change. The tyrants love aid. Aid helps them stay in power and contributes to underdevelopment. It's not social or cultural and it certainly isn't economic. Aid is one of the many reasons for underdevelopment in Africa.'</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
"You said it, I didn't", I said. "There's an awful lot of aid agencies here."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 15.4559993743896px;">"All those vehicles, everywhere you look," he said, which is precisely what I had felt.</span></div>
"So how will things change for the better?"<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
He said, "Change will involve all the old men dying off. Or it might take another forty years."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
"What if all the donors just went away?"</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
"That might work."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
Kind of reminds me of what Connolly says in his 1909 essay "Workshop Talks" :</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
"There are tens of thousands of hungry children in New York today as in every other large American city, and many well-meant efforts have been made to succour them. Free lunches have been opened in the poorest districts, bread lines have been established and charitable organisations are busy visiting homes and schools to find out the worst cases. But all this has only touched the fringe of the destitution, with the additional aggravation that anything passing through the hands of these charitable committees usually cost ten times as much for administration as it bestows on the object of its charity.....Also that the investigation is usually more effectual in destroying the last vestiges of self-respect in its victims than in succouring their needs."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
People need self-empowerment, not more charity.</div>

<div style="line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Directed by Alberto Arvelo</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 15.4559993743896px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Not a bad film, about the legendary patriot and freedom fighter, Simón Bolívar, the only initial first reaction was, "holy smokes it's Carlos The Jackal and he stole a time machine, escaped from french prison and is hiding out from the Mossad in the jungles of South America"....haha just kidding, but seriously I had just seen this accomplished actor, Édgar Ramírez, playing that international insurgent and antiz<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;">ionist guerilla, Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, in the 2010 french film "Carlos", and that heavy duty image was hard to shake, but nonetheless, Ramírez plays a plausible Simón Bolívar, in this historical "epic" production.</span></span></div>
</div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; line-height: 15.4559993743896px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"></span></span><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Good way to remember an uncompromising revolutionary who fought and died for the Republic of Venezuela, years before it became a fact. And let's not forget that the film's creators were on top of their history, so the IRISH BRIGADE , that's right folks, led by Daniel O'Leary, play an integral role in the film, crossing the Andes to free Venezuela, just like they did in real history.</span></div>
</div>
<span style="color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large;">
</span></span>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large;">And just like in so many fights for national liberation, wasn't it always those most comfortable and those with the most to lose that eventually betrayed the revolution and stabbed their fellow comrades, like they did with Bolívar, in the back?! Imperialists and Slavers and Plantation owners , of course. Who else?</span></span></div>
</div>
<span style="color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">
</span></span>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #d0e0e3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large;">But a good movie despite the cheezy soundtrack. And another reminder that, in any revolutionary struggle, those closest to you, as history has proven, time and time again, are probably going to be the first to betray you. But the people, they always remember and revere the Liberators, never the betrayers. Up The Rebels. Up The Republic. Both Venezuelan and Irish.</span></span></div>
</div>

<span style="font-size: small;"> <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">What really disgusts me these days, is when I hear all this hyprocrisy, spewing forth from the mouths of the same individuals who on the one hand, talk about how Gandhi is their hero, and then condemn the national liberation struggles of the Irish, the Basque, and the Palestinians, and ironically, espouse their uncondiitional support of the global terror campaigns of Britain and the USA.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 12.88px; margin: 6px 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> The worst form of this hypocrisy, is when I hear those who support the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, the Basque country and Ireland, claiming that it's "necessary to fight terrorism" and talk out of the other side of their mouths about how "Gandhi is my hero" and how supposedly, Gandhi would have "never supported the IRA or the Intifada"</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 12.88px; margin: 6px 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> But a careful study of Gandhi and the Indian nationalist movement, shows that not only was Gandhi an IRA sympathizer (as were many of his comrades in the Indian nationalist movement) but you will discover two undeniable facts :</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 12.88px; margin: 6px 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Gandhi was an IRA sympathizer who like many of his fellow Indian nationalists, was inspired by men like Terence MacSwiney, whose hunger strike left an indelible impression on Gandhi and his compatriots :</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 12.88px; margin: 6px 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> "MacSwiney's life and work had a particular impact in India. Jawaharlal Nehru took inspiration from MacSwiney's example and writings, and Mahatma Gandhi counted him among his influences.[1][2] Principles of Freedom was translated into various Indian languages including Telugu. Another Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh was an admirer of Terence MacSwiney and wrote about him in his memoirs. While in prison during his trial he went on hunger strike to protest the conditions in which Indian revolutionaries were being kept. Bhagat Singh, in his interview with the Tribune newspaper mentioned MacSwiney as one of his inspirations. When Bhagat Singh's father petitioned the British government to pardon his son, Bhagat Singh quoted Terence MacSwiney and said "I am confident that my death will do more to smash the British Empire than my release" and told his father to withdraw the petition. He was executed on 23 March 1931, with two of his comrades, Rajguru and Sukhdev, for killing a British officer."</span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Secondly, Gandhi had a very large segment of Indian nationalist comrades, who were not pacifists, many of whom were involved in guerrilla campaigns, in many cases, very similar to those campaigns used by the I.R.A. to oust the British occupiers.</span></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> And all this propaganda about "terrorism" here is ironic. Ironic because amongst all this talk of "terrorism", rarely is a word said about the global campaigns of terror by the British (and the Americans) on every country and region they've occupied. </span></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 12.88px; margin: 6px 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ignorance always disgusts me, but there is nothing worse than hypocrisy. Britain used terror on every continent they occupied, from China to India to Africa to South America to Australia to Jamaica to New Zealand to North America, and attempted to wipe out the indigenous culture and the indigenous population of very country they've occupied, and continue to do so, with the help of the U.S. military in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; display: inline; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 12.88px; margin: 6px 0px 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> For those who who would like to read up on the terrorism perpetrated by Great Britain, far from a "civiliser" or "friend of a democracy", but a terrorist and murder machine in every nation and region that the British Armed Forces occupied, I highly recommend, Harvard Professor Caroline Elkins, "Britain's Gulag : The Brutal End of Empire in Kenya" where you can see that many of the same atrocities committed against the Irish were committed against the Kenyans. Education should always be a guide towards the truth and educators should encourage their students to question authority, question the official story on any event, and not be an intellectual coward, afraid to check sources, and truly investigate and research all segments of history. If only we had more teachers like Caroline Elkins.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large; line-height: 14.3520002365112px;">If there is a must see Irish film for people of a Fenian and/or Lefist bent, than you should definitely not overlook "Jimmy's Hall, the amazing true story of Leitrim man and Rebel, James Gralton.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large; line-height: 14.3520002365112px;">Based on the radical struggles and tribulations of former I.R.A. soldier and revolutionary socialist, Jimmy Gralton, whom actor Barry Ward (playing Jimmy), director Ken Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty bring to life in a remarkable and inspirational way that could only come from the rebellious and incendiary life of such a legendary figure as James Gralton, and the brilliant writing of Paul Laverty, whom has never failed to amaze me. From "My Name's Joe" about a working class Glaswegian caught between a rock and a hard place, "Bread and Roses", about the fight for the right to unionize amongst Latin-American janitors in Los Angeles, "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" about Cork volunteers who fought in the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, También la lluvia (Even The Rain) about the 2000 Bolivian Water Wars of Cochabamba, as well as "The Angels' Share", the story of a troubled father from Glasgow who narrowly avoids a prison sentence and is saved by the blessed spirits of Whiskey, Laverty always roots for the underdog and tells a compelling story in the process. But I am convinced that he has written his pièce de résistance, with "Jimmy's Hall". </span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large; line-height: 14.3520002365112px;"> The defiant story of this champion of the working class, James Gralton, has our protagonist battling with all the forces of corruption, greed, and tyranny in the Ireland of Éamon de Valera during the 1930's and 40's as he fights with all his strength and intellect against the local Priest, carnivorous Land Lords, the Free State Army, the Blue Shirts, and Garda Síochána, all because he dares to take an old abandoned and decrepit building (housed on the property of his own kinsfolk) and renovate it and turn it into "Pearse-Connolly Hall" a local community center for poetry readings, dance, dance lessons, political meetings and discussions on Republican Socialism. This simple act of love for his people and giving all his efforts and knowledge towards contributing to the local poverty stricken community doesn't just inflame the Peelers, The Land Lords, the Church and the Free State bastards, but it also needles a local faction of the Leitrim I.R.A., who just had a split, that divides the local brigade between Republican Socialists and a reactionary element of Óglaigh na hÉireann that supports the Land Lords and the wealthier business interests over the landless peasants and poor tenants. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large; line-height: 14.3520002365112px;"> This film is a real treasure, and like "The Winds That Shakes The Barley" shows how the "dissidents" are always the true heroes </span><span style="background-color: black; font-size: large; line-height: 14.3520002365112px;">and celebrates those who fight for the rights of the voiceless, rather than the "rights of plunder" too often given to the Robber Barons, Quislings, Tyrants, and greedy Land Lords. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> This Newfie flick , directed by Don McKellar, screenplay written by Michael Dowse and Ken Scott (of "Starbuck" and "Sticky Fingers" fame) starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, Liane Balaban (New Waterford Girl), Gordon Pinsent, (Made in Canada), Mark Critch (Republic of Doyle), Mary Walsh (Mambo Italiano), Cathy Jones (22 Minutes) and Matt Watts (The Newsroom), its a film that had a really strong beginning, capturing the gritty lives of many Newfoundlanders, many of whom whose families survived as fishermen for many generations and who can fish no more, due to government laws and regulations, leading to many of them having to survive on the dole, yet still lovers of good whiskey and good craic, and celtic music, both Irish and Scottish and many a rowdy shanty sing song at the local pub. The film does a brilliant job capturing that celtic spirit that is still so much of the lives of so many Newfoundlanders, and Brendan Gleeson and his fellow actors play that role so well.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.63636302948px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17.5636348724365px; margin: 6px 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> It's disappointing however, when the film takes a left turn, and becomes not a story of working class Newfies sticking together and forming a union, getting involved in a political campaign to fight for their rights as fishermen and workers, but instead, becomes a story of the unemployed natives begging and pleading for an Oil company to move to their native shores, and if that is not bad enough, instead of just setting up a clinic, they decide it will be better to trick a yuppie doctor from the city to move to their tight knit village. Not only is this a bit far fetched but doesn't really make sense and kind of shows, that not only do the writers not really understand the local dynamics of such a tight knit fishing village, but also displays a serious contempt for their community, making it seem like they are just "local yocals" who can't even fend for themselves, and of course, none of their community ever went to medical school etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.63636302948px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17.5636348724365px; margin: 6px 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Two things are already wrong with this picture.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.63636302948px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17.5636348724365px; margin: 6px 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> The first is how this movie, slowly but surely, becomes a 2 Hour long, Oil Company Advertisment, with the local fishermen, not fighting for their native shores and fishing rights, against the Oil Robber Barons, like Rossport Working Class Hero, Pat O'Donnell, but the opposite,they are pleading for these Oil Speculators to move to their town, despite the fact that they will inevitably contaminate their native shores and fuck off to greener shores when they are done stealing the Oil that should belong to the local people, and sucking the lifes blood from the local populace. Again, obvious contempt for the local community is on display by these screenwriters, who are just out to make a buck while insulting the working class people of Newfoundland. It's reminiscent of the old Benny Hill skits with the "drunken Paddy" and the British racist cartoons denigrating the Irish and serving to make them look less "civilized" or "cultured" as their British detractors. This movie more or less shows the same contempt for the struggling fishing communities, who really shouldn't be begging for an Oil company to move to their native shores and poison their waters after stealing the last of their natural resources, but standing up and fighting for their rights.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.63636302948px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17.5636348724365px; margin: 6px 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Secondly, since when would any self respecting Newfie, want to learn how to play Cricket and trick a yuppie doctor from Toronto to move to Newfoundland?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.63636302948px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17.5636348724365px; margin: 6px 0px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">

<br />
<br />
<figcaption class="caption"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I was in a
gaol, which one I did not know. Cold thick shadows and ugly walls; my
boots crashed off the flags. A clerk in uniform asked questions; an
officer stood by and looked at me. He spoke in a cold, thinly
contemptuous voice. I dislike<span class="text_exposed_show">d
him thoroughly. “Come to attention when the officer speaks to you,” said
the clerk. I did not move my feet or hands. “Am I to be treated as a
soldier?” I asked. There was no reply. A soldier walked in front of me ,
a Webley in his hand, down a gloomy-looking passage. He opened the iron
door of a cell, the door clanged.</span></span></div>
<span class="text_exposed_show"><span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The gas came through a weak
jet which spluttered and gasped, lighting up slightly, now dimming the
outlines of the bare walls; shadows jumped up, fell and climbed again. I
sat on a few dirty, brown army blankets in a corner. I felt a sense of
desolation sitting there all alone. The hard voice of the soldier who
had brought me through the tall narrow passage up the clanging stairway
kept coming back. “There’s your blankets.” The word “blankets” rolled in
again and again as if it had untold significance. He had not answered
my “Good-night.”</span></div>
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I was part of an automaton which spoke a
regulation voice and was dehumanized. It could not attempt to assimilate
so it would destroy. Outside we laughed at the British, here it was
different. I felt them now as a machine; their officers could be
replaced by others, a spare part efficient for a specific function would
always be found. We ourselves had to depend, not on organized strength
so much as on personality, understanding and intimate or intuitive
knowledge.</span></div>
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There was always something ponderous about the British
in the outward effect of their organized efficiency, parade solemnity
and purpose. They were important; they took themselves seriously. The
inherited class hatred of their officer type, which helped to maintain
the isolation of a caste system , filtered through to the ranks of the
army. Behind the mask of assurance and arrogance was another appearance;
it could be seen in the uncertainty and insecurity that a movement of
the people produced. Facing men of their own stamp and mentality the
mask was a skin and did not change much; facing a people whom they had
exploited, walked on, or laughed at, the skin became a mask. I had seen
it lift. Under it was what we feel when we view aspects of our own
futility in a clearly dispassionate way, aspects hidden by the outward
mask which others think to be wholly strength, poise or arrogance. Fear
of the unknown quantity, a spirit, uneasiness at a strength which they
could not paperise in an organized roster way or hit at with organized
force, and the repercussions from their own propaganda which, to show
their achievements, had given us a stature in terms of their own. Their
unreal summing-up of the situation cancered them and traditional
bureaucracy infected them with traditional fears.</span><br />
